GHOST

Ghost is the acronym for Genefinity High resolution One Step Transfer, meaning direct deposition at a high resolution in only one step. Traditional thin film deposition techniques in vacuum chambers and that have particular designs are based on two steps: in the first step the material is deposited on the entire surface area, in the second step, excess material is eliminated with ablative techniques, usually by a laser.

Fig. 1

Genefinity has created a thin film deposition process using a technique that requires only one step. This permits to reduce the cost and management of the plant as well as production time. This technique is completely compatible with continuum roll-to-roll processes in a vacuum environment. GHOST allow to produce any shape and design with all materials that are compatible with sputtering techniques using magnetron (pure metals, metal alloys, ceramics and some groups of polymers) and with a few CVD techniques (Chemical Vapour Deposition).

Typical results obtained using materials with a medium sputtering yield (gold, copper, etc.) in the thin film sensor field are the following:

  • thickness: 25-50 nanometers
  • superficial resistivity: 1-2 Ohm/Square
  • deposition velocity: 50-100 mm/s
  • spatial resolution: <0.05mm

The speed of the film is limited by the mechanics and complexity of the winding system, whilst deposition speed is limited by the dimension and power of the deposition devices used and by the evaporation of the material. Therefore the results provided are only indicative and can be modified according to specific client requests.

The principle markets that GHOST technology is involved in are:

  • printable electronics (sensors, flexible PCB's, electrodes for LCD screens, susceptors, etc.)
  • microfluidics (mixed hydrophobic-hydrophylic patterns, etc.)
  • superficial functionality

Genefintiy offers roll-to-roll plants with integrated GHOST technology and also the possibility to choose between the semi-batch configuration, with on-board winding system and rolls or the integral-line configuration with external rolls and a dynamic feed-through for the film.
